Introduction

This book is one of the “Biomaterials Science and Engineering Series”. The rapid development of biomaterials has led to a wide range of applications in regenerative medicine, drug delivery, antimicrobial, diagnostic and therapeutic fields. The surface interface of biomaterials is in direct contact with living organisms, thus affecting protein adhesion, cellular response and biological functions. This book is based on the National Key Research and Development Program of China (2016YFC1100400), which was undertaken by the author's project team during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, “Research on Surface/Interface and Surface Modification of Biomaterials”. The book is divided into 11 chapters. The introduction focuses on the surface/interface of biomaterials and the definition of adaptive biomaterials. Subsequent chapters introduce the surface-interface modification techniques of biomaterials, protein adsorption behavior and high-throughput research techniques, respectively. The book focuses on adaptive biomaterials, including adaptive fibrinolytic functional materials and adaptive anticoagulant materials, adaptive anti-tissue proliferation coatings and adaptive tissue regeneration materials, and adaptive antimicrobial materials. Antimicrobial materials and their integration with material mineralization are also described.
