唐本忠院士1982年毕业于华南理工大学高分子科学与工程系,获工学学士学位。19883月毕业于日本京都大学高分子化学系,获工学博士学位。毕业后先后在加拿大多伦多大学化学与药学系做博士后和日本NEOS公司做高级研究员。19947月至今历任香港科技大学化学系助理教授、副教授、教授、讲座教授。20063月受聘为浙江大学“光彪讲座教授”。

他长期从事炔烃高分子合成方法论的开发及其功能的探索以及聚集诱导发光现象的研究。已发表学术论文305篇、他引4025次、h-指数46。现任十多家国际学术期刊如Macromolecules Progress in Polymer Science等编委。 2002年获国家自然科学基金委杰出青年科学基金B资助。2007年获裘槎高级研究成就奖、国家自然科学二等奖、爱思唯尔出版社冯新德聚合物奖和中国化学会高分子基础研究王葆仁奖,2009年当选中国科学院院士。他被美国科学信息协会列为“被引用最多的科学家”之一。现为美国化学会Noteworthy Chemistry 专栏科学新闻撰稿人,Polymer Chemistry (RSC)副主编RSC Polymer Chemistry Series主编及十多家国际科学杂志编委。

Ben Zhong Tang received his BS and PhD degrees from South China University of Technology (SCUT) and Kyoto University, respectively. He conducted postdoctoral research at University of Toronto and worked as a senior scientist in Neos Co. Ltd. in 1989–1994. He joined Department of Chemistry at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) as an Assistant Professor in 1994 and was promoted to Chair Professor in 2008. He is Chair Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Division of Biomedical Engineering, Stephen K. C. Cheong Professor of Science at HKUST, and also honorary professor at SCUT. He was elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009.

 

 He has published 600 papers. His work has been cited over 20,000 times, with an h-index of 80. He is listed by Thomas Reuters in 2014 as a Highly Cited Researcher in the categories of Chemistry and Materials Science. He has opened a new area of research on aggregation-induced emission (AIE), which was ranked as one of the Top 100 Research Fronts by Thomas Reuters in 2013. He received a State Natural Science Award from Chinese Government in 2007. He is serving as Editor of Advances in Polymer Science (Springer) and Associate Editor of Polymer Chemistry (RSC) and is on the editorial board of a dozen journals. He has made significant contribution to the development of new molecules (particularly those exhibiting AIE features) with novel structures and unique properties with implications for high-tech applications.
